FAQs

Many pivotal scenes for "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" were shot in Boston, Quincy and on the beaches in Hull. Peoples Baptist Church in Roxbury provided the setting for a young Houston to sing gospel with her mother. The singer's iconic 1994 American Music Awards performance was filmed at the Boch Center Wang Theatre.

Release. The film had its world premiere at the AMC Lincoln Square in New York City in December 13, 2022, and was released theatrically on December 23, 2022 by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film was released for VOD on February 7, 2023, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on February 28, 2023.

She told Yahoo UK, “I sing the first song that you hear in the film, when she's a big younger and needed to be refined. But most of it is Whitney. I just sing for the dramatic beats, so I sing in one of the office scenes, when she's choosing a track. But I don't do it too much.

But Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody only making $23.7M domestically and a combined $59.8M worldwide I would say is shocking.

Just after Houston signed her Arista record deal with Clive Davis in 1982, she broke the news to Crawford that their romance had to stop: “She said 'I don't believe we should be physical anymore. ' The music business was a world that we were learning and we didn't want anything to interfere with where she was going.”

A few things for parents watching with children to be aware of is that there is lots of swearing in this movie and drugs are used towards the end of the film. I give I Wanna Dance With Somebody 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults. It releases in theaters December 23, 2022.

While Ackie told PEOPLE she did "a lot of rehearsal" for the big musical numbers, ultimately, most of the singing you hear in the film is Houston herself.

"I Wanna Dance With Somebody" strives to be the most authentic retelling of Whitney Houston's life. The biopic was made in collaboration with Houston's family and longtime mentor Clive Davis. But the film still strays from the truth or leaves out important moments from the singer's life.

This movie is based on the real story of the friendship between Father Chris and Bob Krantz. While the events in this movie took place several years ago, and Bob and his family have since moved out of Chicago, he and Father Chris still are very close, and see each other several times a year.

At the time of their first meeting—at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989—Houston, then 25, was riding a wave of success that appeared unstoppable, and Brown was a 20-year-old who had already made a smash album.
